The Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue is seeking a Warehouse Specialist in its current Planning and Logistics Section.  This position oversees the day-to-day DFR logistic supply technicians, operations, supports a team of professional firefighters/EMTs and maintains inventory of items received, shipped and returned using an automated inventory control system.
The ideal candidate will have experience leading and supervising workers, driving a forklift in a warehouse setting, driving cargo/delivery vans for delivering items to field personnel and the willingness and ability to lift and carry supply items the department stores that may weigh up to 50 pounds.

Candidates should be highly motivated and have the ability to work both independently and in a group setting to establish and achieve program and organization goals.

ENTRY SALARY: $38,044.50 - $51,304.50/yr.

Performs responsible technical and clerical work in the operation and maintenance of storage warehouse facilities for large or bulk County property parts, supplies and/or furniture items.

Work under general supervision. Leadership and work direction may be given to contractors and helpers.


Compiles and maintains a computerized inventory;
Stores, issues, and distributes parts and supplies;
Keeps inventory and order sufficient parts and supplies;
Operates computerized inventory system in posting receipts and issuance of parts and supplies;
Researches and obtains quotes for parts and services;
Checks quantity and quality of items received against shipping list and reports discrepancies;
Unpacks and stores items; verifies re-order points;
Initiates requisitions for replacement of stock items in accordance with established procedures;
Prepares and maintains inventory records; takes periodic and special inventories;
Orders and receives parts and supplies;
Keeps clerical records inputting data by data entry as required and prepares reports;
Coordinates with contractors and vendors;
Verifies data from computerized Management Information System;
Arranges storage layout of equipment, inventory or supplies based on available warehouse space;
Performs warehouse activities to include receipts, removals, requests, disposal and storage of warehouse inventory;
Performs or oversees receipt and unloading of incoming shipments; which includes inspecting, moving, unpacking, arranging location and stacking of items for storage, and subsequent rearrangements within warehouse, as required;
Follows and ensures adherence to safety and housekeeping rules.


Provides automotive parts and fuel supplies for County vehicles;
Maintains fuel system and pumps;
Operates fuel computer systems to add personnel and track vehicle mileage;
Maintains surveillance over the operation condition of fuel supply and vehicle parts.


Provides operating parts and supplies for County facilities;
Coordinates deliveries with unit personnel; may deliver items to County facilities;
Member of the Safety Council and maintains Environmental Management System (EMS) Certification records;
Issues tools and cuts keys.


Maintains database of surplus items; independently determines items to retain, sell or dispose of; coordinates and handles periodic sale of surplus items; coordinates surplus sales activities with Finance department;
Installs, repairs, reconfigures and services office systems and modular furniture;
Assists in evaluating and redesigning small office spaces according to users' requirements;
Performs or oversees preparation of outgoing shipments in accordance with shipping orders and/or packing lists receiving which includes loading of trucks and allowing for protection of goods and their destination;
Requisitions labor for material moving help and performs similar manual duties required in warehouse operations, including use of equipment;
Periodically requests owner departments to declare stored property surplus, compiles and distribute surplus list, arranges for examination and removal of surplus property claimed by other departments; participates in scheduling, and arranges for setup and tear down of facilities for public auctions to dispose of unclaimed surplus;


Thorough knowledge of warehousing and inventory recordkeeping practices, procedures, and related department policies; general knowledge of office system and modular furniture layout and installation techniques; general knowledge of computerized Information Management System; general knowledge of purchasing procedures and finance; general knowledge of modern storeroom, warehouse and computerized inventory practices; general knowledge of inventory-tracking software; general knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of work;

ability to operate moving equipment including a forklift and pallet jack; ability to use hand and power tools; ability to lift, carry and handle heavy objects; ability to make arithmetic calculations; ability to operate office equipment such as personal computer, fax and copier; ability to certify as office system and modular furniture installer; ability to adjust and maintain stock levels; ability to drive light automotive equipment, if applicable to the work assignment; ability to follow up in cases where issued tools and equipment are not properly returned; ability to lift or carry materials up to 50 pounds, if applicable to work assignment; ability to drive standard sized van or utility truck, if applicable to work assignment; ability to accurately maintain records, running inventory and financial controls; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to lead the work of assigned service workers; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; and 2-3 years experience in receiving, warehousing and shipping large and/or bulk items, to include 1-2 years experience operating forklift, pallet jacks, other warehouse equipment, computer inventory control systems and purchasing procedures, as applicable to the work assignment.

Special Requirements

Fork Lift Safety Certification required within one year of employment, if applicable to the position.
Must possess a valid driver's license, if applicable to the position.
Must pass a pre-employment physical, if applicable to the position.
