Under immediate supervision, learns to dispatch Police, Fire and emergency medical personnel and equipment; actively participate in dispatch training courses; performs related learning and testing activities, and participates in field training exercises to fully develop dispatching skills; with the assistance of higher level dispatchers perform a variety of emergency communication duties; and performs other related duties as required.Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the filing date of their application, unless otherwise specified.

Note: Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour work weeks. Part-time experience must be pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours per week is equivalent to six months of experience. In addition, hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours per week is equivalent to one year, not one and one- half years.
Training and Experience : A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of public contact or clerical/technical work experience.
Knowledge of : office practices and procedures; filing methods and systems; the purposes and uses of standard office equipment; geography of the island of Kaua'i; principles and techniques in dealing with people; computer keyboarding and operation of a computer.
Ability to : learn departmental rules and regulations, and policies and procedures of the communications center; learn pertinent laws and ordinances of the State and County of Kaua'i; learn to operate communications systems equipment; communicate clearly and calmly with personnel and the general public; make sound decisions under stressful conditions; operate standard office equipment, including a computer; type, follow oral and written instructions.

Written Examination : You must qualify on a written test designed to measure your knowledge and skills necessary for satisfactory performance of the duties and responsibilities of this class of work. Your examination grade will be based on 100% of the written test score. Candidates may be examined for their knowledge and abilities as mentioned above.
Please note written exams are held ONLY on Kaua'i. We do NOT conduct testing in other jurisdictions.
When attending the exam, please be prompt. There will be no admittance once the door is closed.
Personnel Evaluation Profile Exam : Applicants who receive a passing score on the written test (described above) will be referred to the Police Department and participate in a Personnel Evaluation Profile Examination the following day after the written exam. Written exam results and next steps will be EMAILED TO CANDIDATES.
